Repair or Replace Your HVAC System? 8 Things Everyone Should Know

So here is the dilemma. When should you consider replacement over repairing your current HVAC equipment? The good news is there are measurable tools that VanKleef Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. has come up with to help you gauge what is best for you. There are eight key things you should consider.

The age of the system and any current repair costs should be factored. When you are looking at your repairs you can narrow your focus to the most recent five years to determine what you have spent and the frequency of problems. You may have recently moved into your home and have a warranty on the HVAC system that can be utilized. We can help you determine how you should leverage any warranties you currently have for your home’s heating and cooling system. If your system is older, the odds are that the efficiency ratings are pretty low. When you compare older system SEER and AFUE ratings to new YORK brand HVAC systems, the technology gap is significant. New systems have much higher efficiency ratings and can make a huge impact on your monthly savings in comparison to your older HVAC system. You also want to look at what type of refrigerant your current system uses and whether the cost of continued future servicing makes financial sense.

The Top 8

  1. Age of your HVAC system
  2. Cost of repair
  3. Under warranty
  4. Number of recent repairs
  5. Your system’s energy efficiency rating outdoor (SEER)
  6. Your system’s energy efficiency rating indoor (AFUE)
  7. Refrigerant type
  8. Years expected to be in home

We have created an easy worksheet that you can download and fill out. Weighing all eight factors will help you know which decision would be best. 1. Depending your on unit, it should show that with your model number. You can always google your make and model number to make sure what your SEER rating is as well.

  2. If your unit is 10 years old, it should have a few more good years in it. Why not start with a Preventative Maintenance contract first. It could be something simple to make your unit run more efficient. Changing filters monthly is also a good way to keep your unit running at it’s best.

  3. These are great things to look at when considering replacing your AC unit. I don’t think a lot of people really think about how long they expect to be in a home, but that makes a lot of sense. For me, I expect to die in this home, so getting a new, more efficient HVAC system makes sense.

  4. My heater didn’t work very well last winter, so I’m wondering if I would be better off replacing it. This list of eight factors that could lead to HVAC replacement is something that I should look over. My unit is over ten years old, so maybe that’s a good reason to replace it by now. I’m not sure how much I would have to pay to repair it, so I’ll consult a contractor to find out if repairing my unit would be more affordable than replacing it.
